If you are like most people, the flash on your point-and-shoot is set to automatic and you believe that flash is made to use only in dark or low-light situations. It comes as a surprise for many to learn that flash can be very helpful in creating beautiful images in broad daylight.
If you would like to test this out, flip your flash setting from ‘auto’ to ‘on’ and take the camera outside with your kids, your spouse, or whoever your subject of choice may be.
If you’ve ever taken a photo in strong daylight you may notice that part of your subject’s face is cast in deep shadow on the opposite side from which the sun is shining. Using the flash will help to fill out that dark area in order to get even lighting across a subject’s face/body and will ‘pop’ the eyes with more sparkle and better color definition. It is also great to use flash when taking close, active shots of kids. Since they tend to run and move around a lot outside, using the flash will help to evenly light them and also ‘freeze’ their movement better in the image. This should help you to get more crisp and successful shots of the kids playing in the backyard or in the pool.
